The right irrigation system depends far more on what you've planted and where than on any single "best" technology. Here's how we decide between the three setups we install most often.
Drip irrigation — best for beds, pots and terraces
Drip lines deliver water straight to the root zone with almost no evaporation loss, which makes them the default for terrace gardens, pot clusters and mixed planting beds where different plants need different amounts of water.
Sprinkler systems — best for open lawns
For large open lawns and campus greens, sprinklers cover area far more efficiently than drip lines would. We size the throw radius and pressure to the lawn's shape to avoid dry patches at the edges.
Manual watering — when it still makes sense
For very small home gardens or spaces used daily, manual watering with a good hose and timer can be perfectly adequate — and it avoids the upfront cost of a fixed system.
Questions we ask before recommending a system
- How much direct sun does the space get through the day?
- Is this a mixed planting bed or a uniform lawn?
- Will someone be on-site daily, or does it need to run unattended?
- What's the water pressure and source at the property?
